Having graduated from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama with Distinction in Performance and winning the Birdie Warshaw prize, Gareth later studied conducting and, among others, has conducted within the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland, the North Wales Youth Orchestra, Aberdeen Sinfonietta and a TV special for S4C. He is conductor of Aberdeen Chamber Orchestra with whom he conducted a memorable performance of Beethoven’s Choral Symphony in the Music Hall.
Gareth regularly appears in recital, as concerto soloist and has recorded for BBC Radio 3. He was, until recently, principal cello with Aberdeen Sinfonietta and plays cello with the Heller and Aurora Quartets. He recently performed all Bach Suites for Solo Cello at the Gamrie Creatives Festival, and this year in St Andrews Cathedral, Aberdeen.
This is a performance of all six Bach suites for solo cello. These remarkable pieces, written between 1717-23, are frequently described as some of the most emotionally intense works in Baroque repertoire. Little played until the 20th Century, presenting a wide range of complex playing techniques, we are fortunate indeed to have Gareth John, locally based and much respected Cellist perform these exquisite compositions within the informality of Aden Theatre.
